Utian Translational Science Symposium, published in the July Menopause, the peer-reviewed NAMS journal.
“Although a significant amount of scientific research about soy and soy isoflavones exists, the adoption of soy isoflavones into the care of women in menopause has to date been recommended mainly by physicians and health care practitioners involved in integrative medicine. We believed that facilitating a robust review of the current scientific evidence about the benefits and risks of soy could yield a document useful to physicians to help them make decisions about soy use with their patients, particularly those in menopause,” said Belinda H. Jenks, Ph.D., director of Scientific Affairs & Nutrition Education at Pharmavite LLC. Belief that Pets Make Owners Healthier Contested by US Study
It is universally acknowledged that pet owners experience less stress and hence have a longer life span. Yet, this remains an assumption, not a fact. A recent US study asserts that this common belief may not be true.
The findings of Howard Herzog, a professor of psychology at Western Carolina University, reveal that past studies pertaining to the correlation between owning a pet and happiness have been contradictory.
In an August issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, professor Herzog stated that pets indubitably improve the psychological wellbeing of individuals but there is inadequate proof to justify the idea that those without pets die earlier.
To some extent, contact with animals decrease strain as one’s mind is engaged in a constructive way. On the other hand, research has indicated that the physical and mental health of pet owners is not necessarily enhanced but is at times worse than the condition of those who do not communicate with pets.
Herzog highlights that the benefits of owning a pet have often been magnified at the detriment of more dismal studies. For instance, in 1980, a study showed that heart attack victims who had pets lived nearly a year longer than those who did not have pets.
Moreover, the media continue to exaggerate the optimistic side owning a pet. In the process, it deliberately downplays the dark side of having pets or rarely mentions the studies stating that pets may not have any bearing on human health.
Quite contradictorily, a specific study carried out last year disclosed that pet owners were more inclined to contract another heart attack after a year of the initial crisis unlike non-pet owners.

Eminent researches envisage that in the forthcoming 40 years, Americans’ life expectancy will be more than what the government actually expects.
On Monday, a significant report was published by members of the MacArthur Research Network on an Aging Society. It states that the U.S Social Security Administration and Census Bureau have miscalculated the average American lifespan in 2050 by 3 to 8 years.
The forecast is that women can live between 89 to 94 years on average in contrast to the state’s prediction which is between 83 to 85 years. Moreover, according to the group, men are estimated to live between 83 to 86 years while the government’s limited their life expectancy to 80 years in 2050.
Co- author of the report, S. Jay Olshansky, says that additional years to one’s life might seem futile but the social and financial impact remains unquestionable. It is to be noted that Olshansky is a professor in the school of public health at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He goes on to state that in the future, the younger population will not be able to meet the demands of the elderly. These may range from improved transport, health care to new retirement schemes.

Dr. Cheryl Phillips, president of the American Geriatrics Society, was doubtful about the possibility of fighting aging. Longevity: 15 Minutes of Exercise Is All You Need
Experts say that 15 minutes of exercise per day is all you need to increase your longevity by three years. So you might no longer be able to say that you are too busy to enjoy exercise.
A relatively new study, released in the Lancet Medical Journal, highlighted that 1 in 9 cancer-related deaths could have been avoided if the patient were involved in 15 minutes of daily exercise.

The longitudinal study that lasted for 12-years, involved 416175 Taiwanese people. The study was carried out in the period 1996 to 2008. In the research groups of people were evaluated in respect to the volume of exercise they practiced, and this data was thereafter correlated to risk of dying from cancer and life expectancy..
It was found that people who had a significant risk of heart attacks, and heart disease would experience strong benefits from a moderate level of exercise per day. Currently, the World Health Organisation is suggesting that 30 minutes of daily exercise will generate ‘substantial health benefits.’ The recent Lancet study demonstrated that small steps can slowly lead to a longer and healthier life.
The study highlighted that engaging people for the recommended moderate-intense exercise of 30 minutes daily is cumbersome, especially for a consistent period of five days a week.
It was concluded that 90 minutes of exercise per week would increase longevity for women by 3 years while for man by 2.5 years.
Previous study, suggested that 30 minutes of exercise per day would increase life by 3 to 4 years. So, starting slowly could motivate people to become healthier.
It is also common that people who start to exercise 15 minutes per day on a regular basis, will soon increase their time spent on exercising.
At Stellenbosch University Department of Sports Science, a fitness lecturer, Sherman Baatjes stated that “One can never say that we are too busy to exercise.” This is especially true, when only 15 minutes of exercise is needed daily.
You can adopt a healthy lifestyle, using a slow transition approach; it is not necessary to start a regular exercise scheme, at ones. A stroll at the beach could be a good start; it would help you to circulate some fresh air in your lungs.

As Dorrie Aber-Noyek reaches her 104th birthday, she is cherished by the staff at the Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida.

Abey-Noyek says to Jerry Simonson, a CNN photojournalist, that she can ‘slow down’ if she wants’ as she rolls her mail cart along the corridor.
This woman who turned 104 years in February 2011 is in perfect health. She does only have some minor arthritis and imperfection in hearing and vision.
What is her Secret for Long-Life?
Aber-Noyek was questioned about her secret for longevity, as a response, she shrugged her shoulders.
Apparently, it is neither her diet nor her physical activity. As the Alfredo sauce is high in fats and consuming pieces of cakes during the day isn’t considered to be part of a healthy diet. In addition, she has never been a member of any particular gym, but she likes walking.
In the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, a study entitled ‘super agers’ investigated people who had lived to an age of above 95 years and their healthy lifestyle in comparison to those who had already deceased.
The study was led by Dr. Nir Barzilai, who is the director of the Institute for Aging Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
The study involved 477 healthy Ashkenazi Jews, aged from 95 to 112 years. The research focused on identifying the health habits that these people undertook in their 70s. The findings revealed that 40 percent of the group was overweight or obese, while 35 percent smoked and were seldom engaged in exercise activities. In other words, most of them were comparable to the general population.
In conclusion, the finding suggests that gene is the main indicator for the long-life of the centenarians.
Studies conducted by Dr. Barzilai and other researchers have found that most centenarians have a gene, which has a link with an increased level of HDL (HDL is good cholesterol). In addition, these people also tend to have genes that safeguard them from Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular diseases.
Yet, the study doesn’t say that people should have a poor lifestyle and afterward look forward to a long-life.
Most centenarians have these longevity genes that safeguard them from most of the age-related illnesses. However, most of us do not possess these magical genes so, we better be attentive and listen to what the doctor have to say.
In addition, related studies have shown that centenarians have strong ties and are involved in the community, so they are equally less prone to depression.
For Aber-Noyek, both the nurture and Nature theories seem to apply. She has a good relationship with people in her surrounding, and her mother had lived to the age of 99 years.
Now at the age of 104 years, she is as amazed as everyone else that she has reached such an advance age. But with a good spirit and strong community bounds, she says that “I’m enjoying life,,” “I love people” and “I’m very interested in them. I love to talk to them and ask them questions about themselves.”
